POTPOURI OF TIMES AND TROUBLES

High Priests quorum met at the Public Hall, Brigham City, January 12, 1881. Called to order by Councilor Fishburn, singing, and prayer by Isaac Smith.

Councilor Fishburn stated that the clerk was absent this evening. He gave the meeting into the hands of the brethren.

Isaac Smith said he felt well, had never had any interest in any other church save the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Felt to do his duty to the best of his ability. Spoke on the absurdity of our young people patronizing Eastern periodicals, of the yellow-covered literature stamp. This ought to be discouraged as much as possible.

Mayor John D. Reese remarked that in the absence of the president he felt like speaking a few moments. Believed we can all perform every duty imposed upon us, but we required to be humble and prayerful, then the Lord will enable us to accomplish every righteous desire of our hearts. In relation to our youth and their inconsistent acts, there is a labor here for us to perform, realizing that we ourselves are to a considerable extent responsible in the premises. Felt to endorse the remarks of Father Box at our previous meeting, recommending a laudable effort to make home interesting by furnishing good reading matter for our families.

Father Box endorsed the remarks of the Brethren and felt thankful to our Heavenly Father that we are placing ourselves in a situation to train up our children in the way they should go.  Referred to the feelings of some individuals when they are called to account for their misdeeds by the Priesthood, they think this interference on the part of the Priesthood is oppression.  It was wrong to sympathize with such spirits. In doing so we partake more or less of their evil deeds.  Gave some wise suggestions in relation to the treatment of our children under sickness.  Recommended pure ice water baths and faith in the administration of the ordinances of the house of the Lord.

President L. Snow exhorted to much diligence in the reclamation of ,he rising generation, especially the young men who had been out on the railroad working and had been under the influence, and partaken in a measure of the habits and custom of the wicked.

Brother Adolph Madsen felt interested in the progress and development of our youth. Referred to the foolishness of some people in patronizing fortune tellers and wizards who were traveling around among he people, thought it would be well for the Elders and heads of families to discountenance this fraud and imposition.

Brother E. Wight was pleased to meet with the quorum, would like to ge our meetings made interesting. We are living in an age of great events. The power of God is being made manifest and the power and span of le adversary is also apparent. Evil is in our midst and it meets us sommetimes where we least expect it. We have a Presbyterian Priest among us who holds out inducements to lead us from the narrow path and to destroy, if possible, our children. We ought not to allow our children to come under his influence. If we do, he will destroy them, and we will be held responsible for it. Trusted that no member of this quorum would become so indifferent in regard to their obligations to God and
the priesthood as to 'send their children to this Presbyterian school.

Bp. Welch said this is a good time for the Elders to prepare their minds for the labor before them. The wintertime is a season for recreation and amusement, especially for the young people, and it behooves to exert an influence over the minds of our youth, that they may be led to observe the counsel of the priesthood in their midst and thus save them from getting into trouble and difficulty.
